BYU-Hawaii Homepage Redesign

Creative Portfolio, Featured on January 21st, 2010 View Comments

Over the last 9 months, I have been working as a part of our university’s web team. We have just rolled out a new design/structure of our website. This project was way overdue, and we’ve had to work through some difficult challenges, but we have created a great product.

My “title” in this project was “project manager”. I was involved in the conception, planning, and marketing of the site. I also created the design for the page. Randy, our graphic designer, then modified the design and really made it shine! Here are some of the rapid prototypes that I created. You can probably tell which one was used for the final design! Arbinger web layouts

Creative Portfolio on February 23rd, 2009 View Comments

These are concept interface designs for a web based training program I was involved in at school. The blue sample was the first one I created.  However, they wanted one with a more “organic” feel to it, so I created the one with Sand and Wood textures.  Yes, it is a rather simple design, but I was creating something that our young web team would be able to reproduce online.  You can see the finished product online here, but please keep in mind, I did very little beyond the template design, so there are plenty of things to work on.

The Arbinger program seeks to help people view one another in ways which promote strong relationships. You can learn more about their programs here. They are quite involved with BYU Hawaii because of my professor, Dr Chad Ford, so this is the reason they came to us for assistance in this program. These are concept interface designs for a web based training program I was involved in at school. PCC DVD Intro

Creative Portfolio on September 8th, 2008 View Comments
I was asked very last minute to come up with this intro video. As you can see, I took still photos and gave them a 3d perspective look, which is not easy. It involves countless hours in photoshop erasing around objects and then using the clone tool to fill the gap. But, I like how it turned out. The full length clips of each of the 3 photos is really cool. It really has a 3d look to it!

Now its time to hurry and get the next project out! (more…)

Kaua'i documentary

Creative Portfolio on August 28th, 2008 View Comments

The Kauai documentary is close to being finished. I guess, more accurately it should be called the documentary of the Salsa Orchestra/Brass Quintet tour in Kauai. This is just a few opening seconds. I was involved in filming this project, am responsible for the editing and distribution, and also graphics. There is a cool title sequence at the end of this one, so be patient through the beginning.

I had a near catastrophe with this video. It was edited on a 1 terabyte external hard drive, until one day I smelled something burning in the area of the hard drive. Sure enough, my hard drive seemed to be burning. To make a long story short, we thought all was lost and that I was going to have to start over. Fortunately, a very helpful fellow over at the TV studio was able to salvage the files, and I am actually now using the hard drive, now converted to an internal drive, to finish the edit.

This all after a long wait for follow up work to be done on the video, including interviews, script writing, etc. Its been a pretty long turnaround, but sometimes that happens here at the school. (more…)

My first attempts at web design

Creative Portfolio on August 18th, 2008 View Comments

My first Christmas, my first steps, my first birthday…life is full of firsts and they carry a sentimental value.  They represent a starting place which gives birth to something great.

Here are my first ever attempts at designing a website.  Our school’s website is in dire need of help, and so as a part of a failed redesign phase in 2008, I created these drafts as idea generators.  It was harder than I would have expected, so many little things to put on the page :)   But now I haver really generated a great interest in web design and implementation.  I am not a coder, but I like the design side of it.

BYU-Hawaii DVD labels

Creative Portfolio on August 15th, 2008 View Comments

I was asked by a producer here to create some disc labels, in my spare time, to be used for printing on a multitude of discs – CD’s and DVD’s – which are sent out from the school. These are basically templates. The person creating the disc can then print a title on the available space. I was asked to utilize the middle only to save on ink and print time, rather than make full color discs. I anticipate making more of these in the future.

Harmony with Aloha

Creative Portfolio on May 21st, 2008 View Comments

One of the first projects that I was assigned to after I arrived at BYUH was the graphics for the BYU Hawaii choir tour in China. There are many products of this project. The first was an audio cd which featured all the songs the choir sang on their tour in China and Mongolia. I was asked to create the CD cover and label. What you see is the finished product. It was printed on hundreds of CDs and distributed.

I have also been involved in making motion graphics for the video documentary. If you click here, you can see a segment of what I produced. It is an animated title sequence. It starts just over 1/3 of the way through the clip and is the only animation, so its easy to pick out. I also made some lower third titles that show the names of people as they are interviewed for this film.

One of the things I learned through the project was how to meet the needs of clients, instead of simply doing what I felt like was the best.  This seems so simple, but in reality it is easy for designers to be arrogant and believe that since we have the “eye” for design, then our way should rule.  However, it is ultimately the one who signs the checks who has the final call on things, and unfortunately, projects often have to be designed to please the decision maker, rather than creating a design that would be most effective.  In some rare cases, those two goals can fuse, and when it does it is a beautiful thing!  This is usually the sign of an openminded leader.

BYU-Hawaii wallpaper designs

Creative Portfolio on March 26th, 2008 View Comments

I created these during some of those dull moments where you feel like you dont have anything to do.  They actually came out of some video projects which never fruited, but I like the design well enough to modify them to be a desktop background.  I’ll consider putting the full versions up for download soon.
