My Zen Garden Design

My Zen Garden Design

As part of my web programming class, I was introduced to the CSS Zen Garden.  The concept is this: you take an existing HTML file with no styling, and by using CSS only, turn it into a completely styled website.  Take a look at how I did for my first CSS website! (more…)

BYU-Hawaii Homepage Redesign

Creative Portfolio, Featured on January 21st, 2010 View Comments

Over the last 9 months, I have been working as a part of our university’s web team. We have just rolled out a new design/structure of our website. This project was way overdue, and we’ve had to work through some difficult challenges, but we have created a great product.

My “title” in this project was “project manager”. I was involved in the conception, planning, and marketing of the site. I also created the design for the page. Randy, our graphic designer, then modified the design and really made it shine! Here are some of the rapid prototypes that I created. You can probably tell which one was used for the final design! Breaking the frame with video

Creative Portfolio on June 16th, 2009 View Comments

Frame breaking with videoThis is a quick and easy one, but ONLY because I used some previously rotoscoped shots of students and tried to make it look like the video was coming out of the frame for an interesting look with a lot of depth and possibilities.  I am envisioning shooting some video to do a proper job of this.  For example, wouldn’t it be cool to shoot a basketball player, then as he jumps he jumps out of the frame?  Maybe a musician standing up for a solo and when he stands he is no longer in the frame.  Anyways, we’ll see if this idea gets developed further. Sprint logo reveal

Creative Portfolio, Featured on June 13th, 2009 View Comments
At work I have been tasked with our school’s website redesign.  In an effort to stay sharp in After Effects, I asked if it would be okay for me to spend some time experimenting, even though we currently have no need for motion graphics.  My boss said yes!
Here is my first 5 second animation.  I really like the logo reveal on the sprint commercials, so I set out to imitate that effect.  I was pleased with the result.  A tutorial will be posted on this as well.  It will most likely be featured on aetuts.com, but I will certainly link to it from my website.

BYU-Hawaii Samoan club

Creative Portfolio on June 10th, 2009 View Comments

Heres a fun project! I created this for the Samoan club to preceed our performance at the BYU Hawaii culture night. The videos purpose was to show that no matter where you are from, you can be a part of the Samoan club. We also hoped to inspire people to join the Samoan club. Finally, we just wanted to blow people’s minds away and get the crowd going before we came on stage! It seemed that such was the case last night! (more…)

Web banners

Creative Portfolio on May 24th, 2009 View Comments

These are a few web banners that I have created for blogs and other websites.  Lots of Photoshop and Illustrator. These were used on a couple different blogs that I had.  One was my personal blog, one was my portfolio blog, and one was a blog I created for my projects at school.  The blogs these banners represent are being retired and replaced by this website.  They served me well, but its time to move beyond Blogger and into something a little more professional! :)

Business Card

Creative Portfolio on May 24th, 2009 View Comments

I had a need to create some business cards for a recent trip I took with the BYU–Hawaii SIFE team. We went to Washington DC and Philly. Didn’t end up giving many of these out, but it was fun to finally make a good business card!  I used Illustrator to design the card, with only a little work in Photoshop to prepare the photo for importing into Illustrator.  Since I never really use browns, it was fun to experiment with different colors I havent used before.

Arbinger web layouts

Creative Portfolio on February 23rd, 2009 View Comments

These are concept interface designs for a web based training program I was involved in at school. The blue sample was the first one I created.  However, they wanted one with a more “organic” feel to it, so I created the one with Sand and Wood textures.  Yes, it is a rather simple design, but I was creating something that our young web team would be able to reproduce online.  You can see the finished product online here, but please keep in mind, I did very little beyond the template design, so there are plenty of things to work on.

The Arbinger program seeks to help people view one another in ways which promote strong relationships. You can learn more about their programs here. They are quite involved with BYU Hawaii because of my professor, Dr Chad Ford, so this is the reason they came to us for assistance in this program. These are concept interface designs for a web based training program I was involved in at school. Logo designs

Creative Portfolio on February 23rd, 2009 View Comments

Here are a few logos I have made recently.  The Glocal Solutions was one that I created in only hour and a half for a friend who was entering a business competition and came to me last minute to help make their logo look a little better. The Lpoint logo was for a business I was going to join, but then it kind of dissolved before I was able to do much in it other than create a logo.  I had some help on this one from a co-worker, John Kung.  He’s the man!

BYU-Hawaii earth zoom

Creative Portfolio on February 19th, 2009 View Comments

This was a spot I created partly to try out Andrew Kramer’s earth zoom tutorial.

I created it when a need arose for a video identity piece for web videos.  Although its never been incorporated into the webvideo workflow, the video has been used for some different applications, most recently being used for the BYUH SIFE team’s presentation for the national championships in Philidelphia.
