Breaking the frame with video

Frame breaking with videoThis is a quick and easy one, but ONLY because I used some previously rotoscoped shots of students and tried to make it look like the video was coming out of the frame for an interesting look with a lot of depth and possibilities.  I am envisioning shooting some video to do a proper job of this.  For example, wouldn’t it be cool to shoot a basketball player, then as he jumps he jumps out of the frame?  Maybe a musician standing up for a solo and when he stands he is no longer in the frame.  Anyways, we’ll see if this idea gets developed further.

This effect requires three processes: rotoscoping, compositing, and animation.

Rotoscoping is basically masking or editing video on a frame by frame basis.  There are tools to assist in this, but is a monotonous and tedious job.  For this effect, you basically have to cut the subject (person) from the background by using a vector mask.  You then have to keyframe or animate the position and shape of the mask to accomodate for the movement of the subject.  Once you have done that, you now have the subject, with no background.

At this point, how you use it is up to your creativity.  Some things to look out for is matching the subject with the background.  All of my subjects have had color modification done to get an overall match with the background they stand in front of.  Some have warmer colors, others more contrast or more brightness.

Once all that is done, its time for the fun part!  Animate it!
